This is a six-shot, 12mm pinfire revolver of the Lefaucheux Model 1858 pattern, the design that brought the self-contained metallic cartridge into wide military use. It has a round barrel with a blade front sight, a stepped octagonal barrel shroud, and an under-barrel ejector rod with a knurled head. There is a hinged loading gate on the right side of the frame, and the rear of the cylinder is notched to clear the cartridge pins. The one-piece walnut grip is secured by a single screw with a decorative escutcheon, and the butt cap carries a swivel lanyard ring. The serial number is 36249, stamped shallowly into the frame as “LF 36249”.
Casimir Lefaucheux introduced his pinfire cartridge in the 1830s, and his son Eugène developed the revolvers that made it famous. The French Navy adopted the Model 1858, and the design was widely copied in France and Belgium. During the Civil War the Union government purchased more than 10,000 Lefaucheux revolvers, many of which went to Western cavalry units, and the Confederacy imported them through the blockade as well. Pinfire revolvers like this one were among the first cartridge handguns many American soldiers ever saw.
Condition: Mechanically good. The action works properly, and the cylinder indexes and locks up as it should. The nickel finish remains on roughly 50 to 60 percent of the metal and has flaked in patches on the cylinder, barrel shroud, barrel and frame, with light brown oxidation where the plating has lifted. There are small chips in the plating at the muzzle. The bore is dark with remnants of rifling. The walnut grip is solid with a good patina, showing light handling wear and minor dings but no cracks. The front sight, ejector rod, loading gate and lanyard ring are all present.
Dimensions: Approx. 11 3/8” in. overall, with a 6 ¼ in. barrel.
An excellent and underappreciated martial arm of the Civil War. [cm] [ph:L]
