.58 caliber, percussion. Lockplate markings: eagle motif/ “U.S/ Springfield/ 1864.” Other markings: barrel year “1864/ V/P”/ eagle-head, buttplate “US” [worn], stock cartouches illegible. Metallic parts exhibit a consistent & pleasing light gray patina, with traces of light pitting & grime, somewhat darker on the under trigger-guard & rear buttplate. Walnut stock displays rich brown patina forward, somewhat lighter at the wrist, with darkening toward butt. Also numerous light dings & small bruise or two, consistent with age & usage. Else VG. Solid medium-range M1863 Springfield [255,040 produced]. Fine display gun. Exudes character.
