.45-70 caliber single shot breechloader. Manufactured C. 1879-85. Approximately 140,000 made. Serial number 238845. Walnut stock is cartouched and dated 1883. Condition is one of the finest we have handled. Case colors on the breech block, which is marked “US/MODEL/1873” (Springfield using earlier produced blocks). Barrel, bands, buttplate and trigger guard with nearly 100% original blue. Bore is mint! Stock is marked on side opposite the lock just forward of butt plate in a rectangular cartouche, “DETROIT BOARD OF COMMERCE”. Also stamped “M/42” on top near buttplate. Mechanically perfect. [ss]
