The Werndl-Holub Model 1867 was an Austrian-Hungarian breech loading rifle designed by Josef Werndl and Karl Holub. This model with the strong design of its distinctive rotating breechblock replaced the trapdoor style Wanzl Rifle and the earlier muzzle loading Lorenz series of Austrian rifles. With modifications the Werndl design was still in service for rear echelon troops until the time of World War One.

This particular rifle is configured as a standard Model 1867 Werndl it has a slightly different rear sight which is missing its slide. The sight was probably changed at Liege to match the ballistic of 11x60mm (43) Mauser round for which this particular rifle is chambered instead of the standard 11x58 Austrian cartridge. The barrel, receiver and breechblock wear the Belgian proof marks indicating conversion to the 11mm Mauser cartridge. The top of the receiver has the name Werndl consistent with the model. The lock is marked with the last three numbers of the year date “870” with an Austrian eagle consistent with Austrian manufacture. The barrel and receiver wear an old flaking lacquer brown finish with a mostly smooth surface. The bore is sharp and bright with a few minor pits. The stock shows a mostly smooth dark oil finish with just two small grain cracks between the lock and the receiver which is common to the Werndl. The cleaning rod is a replacement but an exact copy of the Werndl rod and matches the rifle well. All mechanical features of this rifle are crisp and fully functioning. This rifle will be an interesting addition to collectors of late 19th Century and even World War One period European and Austrian arms.  [jb]
