This Model 1861, .58 caliber, percussion rifle musket is complete, and in fine condition. Produced at the Trenton Locomotive and Machine Company by J.T. Hodge and A.M. Burton.

All gun metal on this rifle is matching semi-bright finish peppered with darker spots and light pitting. Lock plate is stamped “U. S. / TRENTON” in front of the hammer and “1863” behind hammer. A strong spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on lockplate between hammer and bolster.

The 40” long barrel has the original two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight. Breech area shows surface pitting and has a worn “1863”. Proof marks “V / P / eagle head” on left facet of the breech are clear and there is a sharp “N.J” on the left side. Bore is clean and bright with good rifling.

Butt plate boldly stamped with “US”. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Retains its original swelled shank, tulip-head steel ramrod with a threaded end. Barrel bands, band springs, and sling swivels are all present.

Black walnut full stock is in very good condition overall. Has clean edge contours on the flat opposite the hammer. Stock exhibits strong oval “N.J” cartouches on the flat. There are no cracks and only very minor dings and dents from use and storage. Wood retains a very attractive color and finish. A “rack number” is stamped on the top of the shoulder stock near the butt plate tang.

A fine contract musket of the Civil War.  [jet] [ph:L]
