CONFEDERATE “CAPTURED & COLLECTED” M-1861 SPRINGFIELD RIFLE MUSKET, DATED 1862

$2,500.00 SOLD

Item Code: 218-549

Here is a complete Model 1861 Springfield rifle musket. It is dated 1862 and was a product of the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts.

This is an example of one of these guns that was captured or collected by CS Ordnance teams or civilians and placed into the Confederate cleaning and repair (“C&R”) system for reissue to Confederate troops. Some 250,000 firearms are estimated to have gone through this process with the work being done at Danville, Staunton, Lynchburg, or Richmond. This rifle bears a CS final inspector’s stamp, “Q”. The identity of the individual inspector is unknown. Some theorize the letter may be a real initial, but it could be an assigned letter. In any case, the number and variety of guns bearing the mark point to someone working at the Richmond Arsenal or Artillery Workshop.

All gun metal on this rifle has matching moderate to heavy wear and dark color. The color being mostly dark brown with fine surface pitting overall.

The 40” long barrel has the original two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight. Barrel has heavier surface pitting around the breech and bolster. No barrel markings remain visible. Bore is surprisingly clean with scattered oxidation throughout and with no rifling remaining. Bore is in the .63 caliber range now. Cleanout screw has been peened flat on the bolster.

Faint remains of the spread-winged eagle motif is visible on the lock plate between the hammer and bolster. Under the bolster is a barely visible “SPRINGFIELD”.  Behind the hammer is the date, “1862”. Mechanics are crisp and strong.

Butt plate bears a strong “US”. Swelled shank, tulip-head steel ramrod is present. Barrel bands, sling swivels, etc. are all present and in matching color and condition.

Black walnut stock is in good condition overall. No inspector cartouches remain. There are no cracks and only the usual wear from use and storage is seen. Wood retains an attractive color and finish. The Confederate inspection stamp, a “Q”, is worn but visible just in front of the trigger guard tang.

This is a Springfield musket that was captured and inspected and reissued by the Confederacy.  [jet] [ph:L]
