Light weight versions of the robust Model 1886 Winchester are scarce. Those looking for a lighter gun tended to go for a different model. Winchester introduced the Extra Light Weight M1886 in 1896 and it was available in just .33 and .45-70. The company catalogued them as “Extra Light Weight,” but “Light Weight” is often used by collectors and on occasion “Featherweight.” This one is serial number 146930, made in 1908 and is a takedown rifle with the half magazine bearing the takedown patent marking on the left: “-PAT/ JUNE 6, 1893-“ The stock is straight grip, with shotgun butt and hard rubber buttplate marked, “Winchester Repeating Arms Co.” The company was trying to cut down on special orders at the time, but in addition to the takedown feature this is fitted with sling eyes and quick-detachable sling swivels.

The serial number is stamped in correct non-slanted numerals on the lower tang.

The barrel is marked on the left side barrel below the rear buckhorn sight: “- NICKEL STEEL BARREL - / ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER” and just to the right, “45-70” at receiver. Both barrel and receiver are stamped with the Winchester definitive proof WP mark, appropriate for the barrel after 1905 and receiver also by 1908.

The 22-inch barrel and half-magazine show about 90 percent blue, with some slight rubbing at the muzzle and magazine cap. The sides of the receiver show about 40 percent blue with rub lines on the left and a tad less color on the right, with rubbing to a thin caramel brown from handling to the upper receiver and takedown ring, underside of the receiver and rear of the lower tang. Hammer shows some case color on left, faint on right. Lever faint on both sides. All are natural points of handling and consistent with one another and light use. Screw slots are good throughout. The stock is excellent, with good color and surface showing just a couple of light scratches at right wrist and a thin white stain on right butt flat.

This is a scarce configuration for the 1886 in excellent condition and in a sought-after caliber. This requires an FFL.  [sr] [ph:L]
