Item Code: 1140-01

The Winchester M1886 rifle is a lever action, iron framed, repeating rifle. Nearly 160,000 were manufactured from 1886 to 1935. Those under serial number 119,000 date prior to 1898. This rifle is an early one at serial number 44,179.

Specimen has a 24” long round barrel with a tubular magazine located beneath. The rifle’s iron frame employs Nathan King’s (Winchester superintendent) 1866 patent for storing cartridges in the tube and also for loading the tube through a hinged gate on the right side of the frame. Tube magazine is a period replacement (commonly done) as seen by the marks at the mortised band near the muzzle. Fitted to a two-piece, oil-stained black walnut stock; the forestock has the iron nose cap. The gunmetal wears an attractive pewter color with minor dings overall.

Barrel features the standard adjustable rear sight and high visibility front blade sight. The maker’s address is on the barrel top which reads: “MANUFACTURED BY THE / WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.” and “40-82 W.C.F.”  Dusty bore exhibits light, six-groove rifling.

Original black walnut stock is solid condition with minor dings from age and use. Serial #44179 engraved on the trigger strap. Screwheads are all in good shape. Curved, iron butt plate. Rifle mechanics remain strong.

An iconic repeating longarm of the American west.  [jet] [ph:L]
