The barrel is turning a plumb brown with scattered areas of the original bright finish underneath. The front sight is present at the muzzle and the rear sight has two flip up leaves. Left flat of the breech is crisply stamped with “VP” and eagle head. Top of barrel in this area has a good “1863” stamp. The eagle on the bolster is strong. Nipple is original. Bore is good with excellent rifling but does have a light bit of dirt in one areA about ¼ of the way down from the muzzle. There is no pitting.

The lock plate is bright in appearance and may have been lightly cleaned. It has a strong stamping of a spread winged eagle and a crisp “US” over “SPRINGFIELD forward of the hammer while behind it there is a strong “1863.” Action is good. Lock plate screws and hammer screws show little wear.

The wood stock looks as though it was lightly gone over long ago. There are no cracks but there are the usual dings and dents. The wood on the left side of the butt is stamped with two numbers, “6448” and “559.” No cartouche marks are visible. Some original feathering remains throughout. Iron buttplate is dark but does have a good “US” stamped on tang. Both sling swivels are present. All three barrel bands are semi-bright and are held in place by band springs and screws.

The original iron ramrod is incorrect. It is the ramrod for the Pattern 1853 Enfield. [ad] [ph:L]
