HARPER’S FERRY MODEL 1855 RIFLE DATED 1860

$3,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1099-25

Rifle is iron mounted with all metal surfaces showing a dark patina. Round barrel is 33.00 inches long with a mostly smooth surface. There is some minor pitting around the breech. Proof marks of “VP” with eagle head are faint. Blade shaped front sight is present and the rear sight consist of two flip-up leaves. Bayonet lug on the right side of the barrel has been removed and the area where it once was has been properly finished leaving some light vice marks behind. Work is well done. Bore has good rifling with scattered light dirt and minor pitting in spots.

Lock has a strong eagle stamp on the Maynard tape primer door with an equally strong “U.S.” over “HARPER’S FERRY” forward and “1860” behind the hammer. Action works well as does the Maynard mechanism. Nipple shows heavy wear.

The walnut stock has an operating iron patch box on the right side of the butt. The wood surface of the stock has been lightly gone over but a single inspector cartouche remains visible in the wood opposite the lock. Wood shows several small dings and dents from age.

There is a closed hairline crack running from the upper lock retaining screw toward the barrel and for 1.75 inches behind it. Behind the lock there is another hairline crack approx. 0.50 an inch long.

Both iron barrel bands are present and are stamped with the horizontal “U” and both sling swivels are present and move freely. Iron nose cap is also present. Iron ramrod is the correct style with shaft swell. It is full length but the threads are missing. The wood on the ramrod channel shows almost no wear. Screwheads show minor wear. Buttplate tang has a good “US.”

This is a nice looking weapon in good condition.  [ad] [ph:L]
