This side-by-side double-barrel shotgun is marked on both lock plates by J. Hanson, who had a shop at 244 High Street, Lincoln (Lincolnshire,) in Great Britain from about 1860 to 1883.  Marking is also present on top of the spine between the barrels, though faint and difficult to make out.  The wood is very good, with great color and well-preserved fine checkering on both stocks and just a few scattered light dings or handling marks. The metal preserves a thin plum finish on the barrels, with a very evident Damascus twist. The frame shows as a dull silver with some thin faded blue and is profusely engraved with geometric “X” borders, a fan-shell at the breech, and floral scrolls on the hammers, forestock, and both upper and lower receiver tangs, along with a nested, chevron spreading-leaf design. The central portion of both lock plates is engraved with a hunting dog in pursuit of two wildfowl. The belly of the buttstock has a small inlet, blank German silver disk, likely for an owner’s initials or monogram. Barrels measure 28” and are clean and clear, with just some light pitting near the breech. Mechanics are good with crisp action to both hammers.

The triggerguard is profusely engraved to match the rest of the gun and splits to allow the shooter to open the breech using a wide thumb lever that closes over the front of the triggerguard when the breech is shut, giving it the occasionally used nickname of a “thumb-hole latch.” A previous owner identified this as the first version of this patent latch, but it may be the second.

This is a nice example of a classic British sporting gun.  [sr] [ph:L]
