Item is an original Springfield Model 1851, .57 caliber, Cadet rifle musket in nice condition. All the metal surfaces are semi-bright and do not appear to have been cleaned.
The 40.00-inch round barrel has a surface that exhibits moderate scattered mottling and oxidation. Bolster has surface pitting. Proof marks “V / P” and eagle head are visible on the breech with the worn date “1853” stamped on the barrel tang. Date is slightly obscured due to pitting from use. Musket also retains its blade front sight which is mounted on the forward most barrel band and the flip-up leaf long range sight with sliding aperture forward of the breech. Bayonet lug is present below the muzzle. Bore is mostly clean with very small amounts of dirt and dust with very good rifling.
Lock has very strong, near crisp spread winged eagle over small “US” forward of the hammer and an equally strong “SPRING / FIELD 1853” in a stacked, three-line arrangement back of the hammer. Nipple is original. Mechanics are excellent and work properly.
Black walnut stock is in good original condition with much original feathering to the wood and showing very minor wear from use. There is an area meas. approx. 1.50 x 0.75 inch located just above the top escutcheon screw that shows wear from an old abrasion. Ramrod channel shows very little wear. Left side of the butt has a small carved spade or leaf with “M A” over the number “2” at center. No cartouche marks are visible.
There is a very faint “US” stamped on the butt plate tang. Musket retains its original trumpet type steel ramrod with a chipped cavity shaped head and no threaded tip. Both sling swivels are present. Trigger guard and barrel bands match the rest of the metal. Top of rear most barrel band is stamped with the number “6.” Screw heads show light wear.
A rare and hard to find weapon. [ad][ph:L]
