$3,950.00 SOLD

Item Code: 362-1098

This Colt Special Model 1861 musket was made under government contract from 1861 to 1865 by the Colt Manufacturing Co. of Hartford, Connecticut.

Longarm is a .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader with the standard 40” round barrel. The surface of the barrel, like all the metal surfaces on the weapon, is very clean and free of any mottling or pitting. Rear sight is blued and has both flip-up leaves. Breech is crisply stamped on left flat with the letter “P” and “STEEL.” There is also a crisp “VP” with a strong eagle head. Barrel date of “1863” is good with the number “3” being a bit thin. Eagle on bolster is also crisp. Nipple is original and in excellent condition. Bore is spotlessly bright with good rifling.

Barrel is secured by three iron bands all of which bear crisp “U” stamps and inspectors initials. All three bands are held by screws that so no wear. Sling swivels are present on trigger guard and middle band.

Lock plate has strong markings of “U. S. / COLTS’ Pt F. A. Mfg Co / HARTFORD, CT.” forward of the hammer. Behind the hammer is a thin but good “1863”. Action has both half and full cock. Hammer holds at full cock and falls properly.

Walnut stock is in excellent condition. The wood clean with sharp lines throughout as well as an even finish. A close look will reveal some minor rub marks or small dings but all in all the stock is near flawless. The side opposite the lock has two of the crispest inspector cartouches this writer has ever seen. Edges of the ramrod channel are free of any chips.

Buttplate has a strong to crisp “US” stamped on the tang.

Original ramrod is present and is full length with the threaded tip.

This is one of the finest examples of a Colt Special Model that we have seen in years.  [ad] [ph:L]
