Weapon is a single shot muzzle loading .58 caliber with metal surfaces that are heavily mottled giving the iron a dark brown appearance. Though the barrel is dark it has very little scattered pitting. Front sight is the usual blade sight. The rear sight is present with both flip-up leaves but these are frozen in the down position. The left flat of the barrel has strong proof marks of “VP” and eagle head and an excellent barrel date of 1862. Barrel tang screw shows wear. Bore is clean with good rifling but does have some small scattered areas of residue but no pitting.
The lock plate and hammer match the barrel well. There is a strongly stamped spread-winged eagle just forward of the hammer. Forward of this mark is a very good “U.S.” over “SPRINGFIELD” Behind the hammer is a crisp date of “1862.” Bolster screw and the hammer screw are good. Action works properly. Original nipple is present and in good condition.
The walnut stock is in good condition with no cracks and only a few dings and dents consistent with age and storage. There is a line of faint vertical notches running in a straight line from the front edge of the lock plate to the first barrel band. On the left side, the wood behind the first barrel band displays a small old gouge. The flat opposite the lock has two very strong cartouche marks.
Steel tulip head ramrod with swelled shank is original and matches the other iron in color. Ramrod is full length with threaded tip and fits tightly in the channel. All barrel bands and springs are original. The bands bear the horizontal “U” stamp. Both sling swivels are present. Buttplate and trigger guard match in patina. Buttplate has a good “US” on the tang.
