A VERY STRONG WINCHESTER MODEL 1894 TAKE-DOWN RILFE, .30 WCF, 1897 WITH FACTORY LETTER

$3,750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1140-62

Near fine Model 1894 Winchester, “ultimate perfection in a lever action rifle” in Flayderman’s words. Winchester’s first lever action intended for smokeless cartridges. This one is a take-down model in .30 WCF, with a relatively low serial number of 21508, giving it an 1897 date, and comes with a December 2018 factory letter indicating it had the number applied 30 March 1897, was received in the warehouse August 4, and shipped as order Number 12870 on August 6, 1897.

The barrel has 95% or better blue, just thinning slightly, with rubbing to the edges of the octagon barrel. The magazine tube has stronger color with a little rubbing near the band from drawing it upward in the take-down procedure. The receiver shows some strong remnants of blue on the left, thinner but evident on the right, with good color on the loading gate and shiny blue on the bolt. Bottom of receiver, forend cap, breech, and tang show gray, with some thin brown on the receiver extension/take-down ring, but with some strong blue on the tang just under the hammer. Wood has good color, surface, and tight fit, just a couple small chips to rear edge of forestock at the receiver. Barrel measures 25” in length. Bore is clean with good rifling; mechanics function as they should.

This is the classic Winchester, in production until 2006, very popular as a hunting weapon, even used by some military units, and a few Mexican revolutionaries, with roughly seven million produced in a number of variations. This is a very nice example of a lever-action that is a collecting category of its own and unusual in being in the take-down configuration.  [sr] [ph:L]
