SAVAGE MODEL 1899 LEVER ACTION RIFLE IN SAVAGE .303 CAL.

$1,295.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1140-67

Improved version of the 1895 hammerless lever action with rotary magazine, serial number 160297, giving it an approximate 1914 date, though the guns were not finished in order of number. Walnut stock with Schnabel forend.  Straight hand buttstock with checkered hard rubber Savage marked buttplate. Schnabel forend. Barrel receiver and trigger blued, lever case color, bolt white. Front sight and rear peep sight in place.  Barrel measures 20” in length.  Bore is excellent, very clean.  Mechanics function well.

Fine condition with 90 percent finish, strong blue to barrel, and sides of receiver, showing just some wear to edges and some natural rubbing to the underside of the receiver from handling. Bolt, finished in white, shows some thin gray and spotting. Lever shows thin case colors. Wood has sharp edges, some shallow scratches on left wrist and flat near comb. Buttplate shows little wear at top edge. Lettering and numbering, including that on buttplate, is sharp.

These rifles were made at a highpoint in lever-action design, just when it was being challenged by bolt action rifles. This is very nice example of a relatively early Savage, ultimately produced in the hundreds of thousands. [sr] [PH:L]
