The first Marlin lever action chambered for smokeless cartridges. Correct pre-1919 barrel address including patent dates, “25-36 M” caliber designation at breech, “Marlin Safety” on top of frame, and early production “MODEL / 1893” tang marking. Serial number 212400, dating it to 1900. Rifle correctly omits the post-1904 “special smokeless steel” marking at left. Octagon barrel with full length magazine tube. All metal is smooth and the wood has a tight fit. Front blade and rear adjustable buckhorn sights in place. Full coverage of thin barrel blue with slight wear lines on edges. Magazine tube coverage strong below muzzle then thinning caramel brown from handling. Nose cap a thin brown. Forestock very good with nice color and surface, just a few scratches toward the rear at the take-down ring. Take down ring shows thin blued with rubbing adjacent on left. Left receiver gray at rear; brown forward. Right side mottled grays and browns, with blue showing on loading gate, and on some screw heads, with some traces of case on the forward end of the lever and the bolster. Crescent buttplate shows silver gray. Buttstock has good fit and finish. Small scratches on right at wrist and midpoint of flat. Left shows deeper scratches near buttplate and drag line at bottom. Mechanics function well; bore is clean with good rifling. Barrel measures 25” in length.
We include with this an original, full, pack of 20 Marlin cartridges. Marked on the top, “25-36 MARLIN / SMOKELESS C.F. CARTRIDGES / manufactured by / THE PETERS CARTRIDGE COMPANY / CINCINNATI. O. U.S.A.” with their green printed guarantee on one side flat, and on one end “PETERS / .25-36 / SOFT POINT / SMOKELESS.” With black lettered red “SOFT POINT BULLET” label below. Very good condition, though the latter applied label is torn on right edge.
Total production of the Model 1893 lever action is estimated at over 850,000 from 1893 to 1935 with numerous special-order features available, giving the collector lots of variations to work with. [sr] [ph:L]
