$2,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2023-3264

This the Model 1861, .58 caliber, percussion rifle musket as made at the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts.

All gun metal on this rifle has matching patina. A spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on the lockplate between hammer and bolster. Under the bolster is stamped, “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD”.  Behind the hammer is the date, “1862”.

The 40” long barrel has the original two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight. Barrel shows very light pitting around the breech and bolster and possibly the “18” is visible of the date on the top of the breech. Proof marks “V / P / eaglehead” are light on left facet of the breech. Bore is dark and in need of a good cleaning; decent rifling.

Butt plate bears a strong “US”. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Barrel bands, sling swivels, etc. are all in good condition. Reproduction ramrod.

Black walnut stock is also in good condition. There are no cracks and only the expected minor dings and dents from age and storage. Left flat exhibits worn edge contours and no cartouches are visible. Wood retains dark original color and finish.

An early example of a true Springfield-made musket of the Civil War.  [jet][ph:L]
