This musket is a Liège (Belgium) made gun, a copy of a French Model 1857 Rifle Musket. Round barrel measures approximately 40 ½”, is the standard (French) .69/.70 caliber, and is rifled. Bore is clean with scattered fine pitting, and good rifling. Long-range rear sight and blade front sight. Two single barrel bands and “double band” nose cap. Band springs used to hold barrel bands in place. Sling swivels attached on middle barrel band and at front of the trigger guard. Typical back action lock with huge hammer. Lock plate is unmarked except for a small crown over a “B”. Complete original ramrod. Small proof marks appear on many parts: lock plate, butt plate, trigger guard, barrel, sight, barrel bands, ramrod, and stock. All gun metal has similar clean, bright color and wear.

Musket stock is in good condition. Nice deep color. No major chips or gouges in the wood; only the usual dings and scratches. The right side of the shoulder stock also bears the maker’s name, “MONSEUR / LIEGE”.

Accompanying bayonet is the new Model 1857 bayonet. Typical triangular socket bayonet in very nice condition. The blade bears a gray patina. Flat stamped “T.C. / AS / 23”. The bayonet fits the musket perfectly.

This is a very nice rifled musket typical of European imports during the Civil War…with a bayonet!   [jet] [ph:L]
