This beautiful rifle was made by gunsmith J.V. Geiger and features many lovely characteristics.  The heavy, octagonal .50 caliber barrel measures just under 36” and, while the bore is dull, the rifling remains strong.  The gunmetal surface finish is present and has given to a brown color.  The wooden ramrod is secured by two looped guides with some bare metal showing around the edges.  The front sight blade is slight bent to the left, while the rear horned sight is in fine condition.  The top of the barrel is marked J.V. Geiger, as is the left side top flat.  One of two tang screws is missing but the barrel exhibits no play.  The lockplate is affixed by a single screw with a decorative brass washer, and is marked “J.V. Geiger”.  Some of the original finish remains while the rest shows bare metal.  Very slight wood loss is evident near the bolster but the one-piece stock shows only light dings and scratches throughout – primarily on the lower right butt near the plate and patch box.  A nice swirled pattern begins at the forend and continues to the butt.  A brass patch box is affixed by 4 screws with a cloth patch still inside that has formed to a round ball. The brass buttplate forms two sharply pointed edges, typical of civilian pattern guns of the period and the brass trigger guard is rather ornate with two finger rests. A carved cheek weld on the right side shows only minor wear at the rear.

The mechanics of the rifle work properly.  The hammer locks securely in both cocking positions, but the portion of the hammer which directly strikes the cap and nipple is broken around the front edge – likely a victim of dry firing.  The double set trigger provides an extremely light trigger pull, estimated at less than 2 pounds.

This rifle would display beautifully among any collection and likely dates from the year(s) directly preceding the outbreak of the Civil War.  It is a fine example of practical but attractive civilian weaponry commonly used for hunting or target shooting, and no collection is truly complete without a ubiquitous gun of the greater Civil War period.  [cm][ph:L]
