Model 1842, .69 caliber musket manufactured at Harpers Ferry and later rifled. Springfield and Harpers Ferry modified approximately 14,000 M1842 smoothbore muskets by rifling the barrels, adding a long-range sight, and counter-boring the end of the ramrod. This was done following the 1855-56 experiments that resulted in the adoption of the Burton-style elongated “minie ball”.

The barrel is a full 42” in length and in overall very fine smooth condition with bright finish. No pitting around breech and bolster area with date “1854” clearly visible. Rifled bore; clear and bright with good rifling. Long-range flip up sight is mounted atop the barrel. The original ramrod with good threaded end is present and with head modified to accept the new, pointy minie ball.

The hammer and lock plate are in very good condition. The “US” and eagle appear in front of the hammer with “HARPERS / FERRY / 1854” clearly stamped behind the hammer. Trigger and hammer mechanics are crisp and strong. Bolster is stamped “20” on the side.

All metal parts including barrel bands, band springs, trigger guard, butt plate, and swivels are present. All gun metal has a matching smooth, bright surface. Several parts have small sub-inspector stamps.

The black walnut stock is in very good condition with a handsome patina and original finish. Stock bears two light cartouches on left flat. A few minor dings and dents from storage and age.

An attractive and very clean M1842 Harpers Ferry rifled-musket. From the Texas Civil War Museum collection.    [jet][ph:L]
