Exceptional German Kar-98k 7.92mm service rifle made in January 1945 and with Kriegsmodell features.  During the final months of World War II, the Kar-98k was simplified by the removal of the bayonet lug, cleaning rod, and stock face bolt disassemble disk, coupled with the increased use of stamped parts and wood screws.  These last-ditch rifles are highly coveted by collectors of German WWII military firearms.

This example appears to be like-new and unissued.  All the serial numbers match and 98 percent of the blued finish is remaining, with the only wear visible on the bolt extractor from working the action.  The bore is also exceptional and probably only had test rounds fired through it.

Principal markings include: “3957q” (serial number); “bnz 44” (manufacturer and receiver date of manufacture); eagle over “623” (military acceptance stamps); “Mod. 98” (model: Karabiner Model 1898); eagle over “H” (army property mark).

The maker is Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG, Austria.  Steyr manufactured 31,800 Kar-98k rifles in 1945; based on the serial number, this rifle was made in January 1945.

Several features of this rifle indicate it has not been changed/modified since the war.  First, Steyr stocks have a rectangular shaped bolt knob cut-out on the right side; the other Kar-98k manufacturers used a square shaped cutout.  This example has the correct Steyr rectangular cutout.  Second, many collectors are unaware that Steyr used a different shaped front sight hood than the other Kar-98k makers; the proper Steyr sight hood has a continuous curve making it larger (the other makers used a sight hood with flat sides).  This gun has the correct Steyr hood, which is a bonus as most Steyr Kar-98k rifles are found with the wrong sight hood.  Third, the front and rear barrel bands of Kriegsmodell rifles were typically attached using wood screws.  These late war screws were not hardened, so the heads typically exhibit minor buggering in the tightening direction.  This means if the screws have ever been removed you will see buggering in the opposite (left) direction.  This rifle only has signs of the screws being tightened, not loosened.  Please see the reference book Kriegsmodell by Steves and Karem for a detailed discussion of these rifles; information regarding the Steyr stock bolt knob cutout is found on p.214, the Steyr sight hood on p.215, and the unhardened screws on p.216.

Wonderful opportunity to obtain a collector-grade German Kriegsmodell rifle made late in the war when the Third Reich entered its death throes!  Like-new and unmolested Kar-98ks are also becoming very difficult to find as they are highly prized by collectors. [sk] [ph:L]
