Model 1842, .69 caliber musket manufactured at Harpers Ferry, VA. The barrel is a full 42” in length and in overall nice smooth condition with about a 50/50-gun metal gray to brown finish. No pitting around breech and bolster area with date “185” clearly visible (last number is not present). Smoothbore. Bore is clear with fine, light, oxidation. The original ramrod with good threaded end is present. Both sling swivels are straight and function properly.
The hammer and lock plate are in very good condition. The “US” and eagle appear in front of the hammer with “HARPERS / FERRY / 1850” clearly stamped behind the hammer. Trigger and hammer mechanics are crisp and strong. Nipple is perfect original.
All metal parts including barrel bands, band springs, trigger guard, butt plate, and swivels are present. All gun metal has a matching light gray, mottled plum patina.
The black walnut stock is in very good condition with a handsome patina and original finish. Stock bears a light cartouche on left flat. No cracks are present with only small bruises associated with use. Otherwise, just a few minor dings and dents from storage and age.
An attractive and very displayable M1842 Springfield musket from the southern arsenal maker. Harpers Ferry Arsenal produced a total of 106,629 model 1842 muskets, with 9,600 being made in 1850. [stp] [ph:L]
