Early double barrel 10-gauge shotgun. Heavy 9 pounds 10 ounces overall weight. With 35 ½” round barrels having an even dark brown patina, except a cleaned area towards the muzzles. One small area of lighter corrosion about 2 inches back from the muzzles. Small round copper bead front sight. Flat top barrels are hand engraved “J. C. JOHNSTONE No. 2”. A winged crown device is engraved between the hammers on top of the breech. Each side of the barrel has a round inlaid platinum plug. Two iron ramrod pipes attached on the underside of barrels with old wood ramrod. The top pipe has an attached loop for a sling swivel. The bottom has a fine pine apple type decoration perfectly inlaid in the stock.
Back-action lock plates are hand engraved “J. C. Johnstone No. 2” with a simple line engraved border around the lock-plate. Hammers are unmarked, but have nicely engraved recessed channels around the outside contour. Nipples are in good shape. Screw heads are also engraved. Mechanically excellent with two triggers. Trigger guard features hand engraved designs with a pineapple type upper tang decoration. It is also affixed with a lower sling swivel attachment. Butt plate in great condition with long stepped-tang, having a hand engraved border. All gun metal has matching dark patina.
Fine grained walnut stock has checkered wrist and retains original rich color and finish. Minor handling marks consistent with age and use. No cracks and very tight. The butt features nice figured, extra grade curly walnut. The wrist has an unmarked silver rectangle inlay. The fore stock is held by a single barrel wedge, featuring two iron oval escutcheons, decorated with a flowery design.
A nice, certainly expensive at the time, complete percussion shotgun, most likely imported from England. [stp][ph:L]
