Presented here is a Sharps Model 1852 sporting carbine referred to as the ‘Slant Breech’ or ‘Sloping Breech’ model. This Model 1852 is one of an estimated 4,995 such pieces made and is the forerunner of the more famous model Sharps carbines of the Civil War. The single-shot, percussion firearm is a .427 caliber or 60 bore, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. The 1852 date on this carbine signifies the patent year in which Mr. Sharps invented his ingenious pellet priming mechanical system and integrated it into the upper forward section of the lock plate. It also employs Sharps’ first side-hammer, percussion “slanting breech” frame design. Referred to as a Model 1852 ‘Slanting Breech’ sporting carbine, this specimen was produced by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company in Hartford, CT between 1853 and 1855.

The key features of this model of arm are the long retaining spring on the right forearm and the ‘comma’ shaped lever hinge pin. As an upgrade to the sporting version, a sling swivel has been factory installed at the base of the trigger plate and on the single forearm barrel band. A factory sliding tang sight is also present, with a perfect color match.

This carbine is in very good condition and carries serial number “7002”. The carbine has a 21½” long round barrel and the slanting breech. The lock plate is crisply stamped with “C. SHARPS / PATENT / 1852” while its tang shows the markings of “C. SHARPS / PATENT / 1848”. Stampings are clear and sharp. Barrel breech exhibits the maker’s name with a three-line address of “SHARPS RIFLE / MANUF’G CO. / HARTFORD, CONN” in weak markings. Rear folding sight exhibits the Robbins & Lawrence patent markings. Original pellet priming system is present and appears to be functioning correctly. The brass blade is missing from the front sight, although the dovetailed base is still in place. The barrel retains about a 50/ 50 mixture of factory blue faded to dark. The receiver, hammer and lever all carry a dark brown uncleaned patina. The butt plate has no markings, is dark, with slight peppering. The patch box is tight with dark color and carries serial number “7002” stamped on the inside lid. The patch box mortise also has number “7002” stamped in the wood. Overall, the screws are in excellent condition and show no evidence of being turned in a very long time.

The wood stock surface is smooth with no cracks or breaks but does show some normal dings and dents scattered overall. The most noticeable being on the top of the stock, midway between the comb and butt. The color looks to have an old coat of varnish applied at one time. Still very smooth surface. No cartouches visible, as should be for a private purchase gun. The bore is in an excellent state of preservation with bright mirror surfaces. The rifling of six ‘lands and grooves’ are sharp and crisp. The carbine exhibits very strong and crisp mechanics.

An interesting note was found folded up tightly in the patch box. It is dated October 19th, 1991 and documenting the sale of the Sharps at that time. It was being sold by a member of the Baylor family in Augusta, AR. It was noted as belonging to a grandfather that was a Confederate doctor in the area during the civil war. Additional research may reveal more information.

This Model 1852 Sharps ‘slant breech’ sporting carbine is an outstanding early Sharps factory product and presents the collector with an excellent opportunity to enhance their firearm collection. [stp] [ph:L]
