Contrary to popular belief the French Expeditionary Force during the Crimean War of 1854 to 1856 for the most part carried Model 1816, 1822 and 1842 percussion ignition but all smooth bore muskets. Very few rifled arms were in circulation among the French, and these were distributed to Zouaves, Chasseurs and Infantry of Napoleon the Third's Imperial Guard. Please view this link (https://grokipedia.com/page/Imperial_Guard_(Napoleon_III).
Offered here is a French Model of 1842 T Rifled-Musket with a back action lock. These were originally produced as smoothbore muskets. But in 1854 a handful were selected to be rifled and issued to the Grenadiers of the Guard. The modifications consisted of rifling the weapons and modifying the ramrod by cupping its end to accept the famous, newly perfected, Minie Ball. Additionally, the original barrel length of 42 inches was maintained as the Guards were big men. So, what we are offering here is a "Modelle Systeme de 1854 De La Garde Impériale" which was a Minié rifle. This one as well as having "M. 1842" engraved on the barrel tang also has the number "186" over "B. G" which is the 186th weapon or soldier and "Brigade de la Gardes". After the Crimean War the Guards carried these weapons in the hard-fought Italian Campaigns. Please follow this link (The battles of Magenta and Solferino, 1859 - napoleon.org). Eventually these arms were replaced by the 1853 system of weapons and these with the famous Model 1866 Chassepot rifles.
This arm is in excellent condition. It is fully iron mounted and bears a clear engraved maker marking on the lock plate: "Mre R'le de St. Etienne", indicating manufacture at the Royal French Arsenal located in Saint-Étienne. The barrel is 42 inches in length, and the weapon is 58 inches long overall. The 3-band rifled-musket musket has all iron mounts and both original sling swivels are intact. Assorted inspector's marks appear on all the iron components including the barrel. There is no rust or pitting worth mentioning and the metal overall is a pleasing mottled pewter in color. The ramrod is original to this arm and 'Mle 1854 de la Garde". It is threaded at the end. The walnut stock is in excellent condition. There are no breaks or repairs. The action works perfectly, and the rifling is excellent. It has its original bayonet which fits it perfectly.
Interestingly this arm early in our Civil War made it over here imported with thousands of other French weapons by US agents. It was found in York, Pennsylvania and was once in the collection of Joe Kindig Sr. of Kentucky rifle fame. A great addition to a Crimean War, French arms or Civil War collection. [pe][ph:L]
