This Model 1816 Springfield .69 caliber smoothbore musket was altered from flintlock to percussion. The musket has a 42” barrel secured with three barrel-bands that in turn are held in place with iron band springs. Bore is clean. Barrel has no rear sight as normal and a small, blade-shaped, brass front sight mounted on the double upper barrel band. Small bayonet lug mounted on top of barrel at muzzle. Left barrel facet exhibits the proof marks “P / [eagle head] / V” and other secondary markings. Barrel breech tang is stamped with “1817”. The earlier style of lockplate is strongly marked “1816” behind the rounded, high spur hammer. Forward of the hammer the script “US” over an eagle motif (head worn away) over “SPRINGFIELD” (set in a downward arch). Frizzen pan space is filled with brass plug. Original “button head” ramrod remains in good condition. Has both sling swivels, one at the middle band and one in front of the trigger guard bow. Butt plate is marked with a weak, horizontal “US” on the tang. All gun metal is semi bright with scattered surface rust.

Black walnut stock has original color and finish. Normal scuffs and dents to the wood from age and use. Visible on the underside of the butt stock just behind the trigger guard backstrap is a stamped name, possibly the stock maker or an inspector.  This stock is in very good condition.
