Some 200,000 thousand firearms captured or collected by CS Ordnance teams and civilians, along with perhaps another 50,000 turned in by CS units, went through the cleaning and/or repair (“C&R”) system of the Confederate Ordnance Department for reissue to Confederate soldiers. The process took place mostly in the eastern theatre, where Lee’s victories left battlefields and arms in Confederate hands, and was concentrated at facilities at Danville, Staunton, Lynchburg, and Richmond. This L.G.&Y. contract U.S. rifle musket shows a final Confederate C&R inspector’s stamp on the underside of the stock, just forward of the trigger guard, reading “Z.” This has been associated with Captain Louis Zimmer, who supervised C&R operations at Richmond from late 1864 to early 1865, though it is possible inspector letter codes, while indicating specific inspectors, did not use and individual’s initials.

This musket was a product of the firm of E.G. Lamson, A.F. Goodnow, and B.B. Yale with forging facilities at Windsor, Vermont and machine shops in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. These were produced by the firm during the years 1862 thru 1864.

This rifle musket follows the standard configuration of the Model 1863 with screw-tightened barrel bands, sling swivels, ramrod, and markings. Butt plate is stamped “US”. Ramrod retains threaded end. Two of the three barrel bands retains the proper “U” stamp.

All gun metal (save the ramrod) is smooth and bright overall with just scattered light spotting and finger printing, having been cleaned and buffed at some point.

The lock plate has a clear stamping of “US” over “L.G. & Y.” over “WINDSOR, VT.” forward of the hammer with a strong “1864” behind it. There is no spread-winged eagle which is correct for the 1864 lock. Action works properly.

The barrel features an eagle on the side of the flat bolster. Both sights are in place and the rear sight has both sight leaves. There is no date left on the breech, but the V/P [eagle head] barrel proofs and inspector’s initials are fully visible on left facets. A small “M” sub-inspection stamp is found behind the breech tang screw. The bore is dirty with minimal rifling.

The walnut stock, like the gun metal, has been cleaned. Stock was lightly sanded and varnished. Wood tone is now light brown. The lockplate retains a nice tight fit with the wood. The left side shows no cartouches and expected rounding to the edges. Thankfully, on the underside, just above the trigger guard tang is a fine “Z” stamp that was left undamaged by the “cleaning”.

Steve Knott’s book on Confederate reissue arms is the go-to source on the subject: The cataloging of their repairs, their inspector marks, and the wide variety of arms that went through the system. This is a real opportunity for those looking to acquire a real Confederate-used arm.  [jet][ph:L]
