This Model 1861, .58 caliber, percussion rifle musket is complete, and in fine condition. Produced at the Trenton Locomotive and Machine Company by J.T. Hodge and A.M. Burton to meet the armament demands of the Civil War.

All gun metal on this rifle has a matching dull finish with no pitting. Lock plate is stamped “U. S. / TRENTON” in front of the hammer and “1864” behind hammer. A strong spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on lock plate between hammer and bolster.

The 40” long barrel has the original two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight. Breech area shows no pitting and is stamped “1864”. Proof marks “V / P / eagle head” on left facet of the breech are clear and there is a sharp “N.J” on the left side. Bore is clean and semi-bright with good rifling.

Butt plate boldly stamped with “US”. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Retains its original swelled shank, tulip-head steel ramrod with a threaded end. Barrel bands, band springs, and sling swivels are all present.

Black walnut full stock is in very good condition overall. Has clean edge contours on the flat opposite the hammer. Stock exhibits a cartouche on the flat. There are no cracks, only minor dings and dents from use and storage, and an understated carving (“V V”) just ahead of the side plate flat. Wood retains a very attractive color and finish. A “rack number” is stamped on the top of the shoulder stock near the butt plate tang (26), as well as on the butt plate (36). A letter “F” is stamped just behind the tang.

Overall, a very nice example of the nearly-ubiquitous Springfield Model 1861 Rifle-Musket with solid New Jersey provenance.  [cm][ph:L]
