Presented is a rifle specimen produced by the Robbins, Kendall & Lawrence firm, the first of many successful arms-making companies located in Windsor, Vermont. Often referred to as the ‘Mississippi Rifle’, this shoulder arm is a U.S. Model 1841 percussion rifle and one of 10,000 such rifles produced from 1845-1849.
The single-shot, muzzleloader percussion-rifled barrel features the original .54 caliber barrel. Barrel does not have the adjustable, long leaf range rear sight but has the single, open sight. Lock plate features a two-line marking that reads “WINDSOR VT / 1847” behind the hammer. Forward of hammer is stamped “ROBBINS / KENDALL & / LAWRENCE / U.S.” All stampings are small but strong and clear. Overall length of the weapon is 48½” and weighs almost ten pounds.
The factory round barrel measures 33” in length and retains traces of the original finish. Each of the M1841 longarms had black walnut stocks fitted with brass furniture and a brass patch box. All brass has acquired a rich, mellow bronze patina. The stock exhibits a smooth surface with very little wear. A single sub-inspector mark “C” appears on the brass side plate, trigger guard, patch box and on butt plate. Stock flat bears two light inspector cartouches. Mechanics are good. Rifling is strong - bore suffers from a single area of surface grime. A period nipple protector with brass chain is secured by the hammer.
A nice example for a fine Civil War weapon collection. [cm] [ph:L]
