Original Remington military long arm produced circa 1867-1888 with the unique ‘rolling block’ configuration and action. The ‘rolling block’ rifle, aka has the Model 1871 Springfield, employed an interlocking system of hammer and breech that was deemed one of the strongest actions of its time. Not a popular long arm to the U.S military at the time, the governor of New York State contracted for an initial 15,000 units with the maker for NYS militia use.
Chambered for a rimfire 50/70 caliber round, the rifle exhibits the large #1 action with a high spur hammer and a projecting ear-like lever on the right side of breech block. The 36” round barrel is secured to the full black walnut stock via three barrel bands with barrel retaining springs. A long-range, full folding rear sight rests atop the barrel breech. Barrel has been cleaned and shows no original colors. Does exhibit scattered spots of surface rust. Bore is semi-bright with good rifling. Stock has not been cleaned and shows moderate dings, dents and wear from age and use. Stock is in good condition with no cracks or repairs visible. Two small period chips behind barrel bands. Government cartouches stamped on both sides of the stock behind the receiver, and a bold “5” is stamped on the left side of the stock near the center.
Gunmetal including hammer, action, trigger guard, and receiver all show evidence of careful cleaning and exhibit and smooth surface. Receiver tang shows the maker’s three-line address which is still sharp and clear with the exception of the final date’s last number. Various other small inspector markings seen on this rifle. No ring bar or saddle ring. Mechanics are strong. Rifle has both swivels and the original ramrod with its ribbed, slotted body and threaded tip. [cm][ph:L]
