Nice example of a very uncommon German G-Date 7.92mm Kar-98k service rifle made in 1935.  Principal markings include: “3556” (serial number); “S/147/G” (manufacturer’s code and year of manufacture); “Mod. 98” (model); Weimar style eagle over “WaA214” (military acceptance stamps).  Since the rifle was made in 1935, the overall manufacturing quality is exceptional – and without the production shortcuts and cheaper materials used later in the war.

The condition is Very Good with thinning blue overall from service use (though the barrel, receiver, and bolt assembly rate at 85%).  It appears the rear band and magazine floor plate have been overcleaned, leaving most of the blue gone.  The bore is very good with strong rifling.  The stock is excellent with only light handling marks.  The stock serial number “3556” is legible, but the other stock markings (inspection stamps; property mark) are faint on the stock.

The rifle is fully functioning and all the serial numbers match with the exception of the bolt assembly.  All the serial numbers of the bolt assembly match themselves.  The bolt assembly is serial number 5797a and stamped WaA280 for Erfurter Maschinenfabrik Werke (ERMA).  The bolt assembly was made in the 1930s and matches the rifle’s overall quality/finish perfectly, suggesting it has been mated with this gun a long time.

Other than the bolt assembly, all the serial numbers match on this rifle including the trigger guard screws!  The cleaning rod is original, but a later war replacement as it has no serial number.

As designated by the “S/147” manufacturer’s code, the rifle was made by J.P Sauer & Sohn Waffenfabrik, Suhl.  Sauer manufactured approximately 68,638 Kar-98K rifles in 1935.  The enigmatic “G” code was used in lieu of a date stamp in 1935 to conceal Germany’s rearmament in direct violation of the Versailles Treaty.  As such, G-Date examples of the Kar-98k rifle are rare due to low production numbers and survival rates.

The rifle bears an “8” stamp in the stock forward of the magazine floor plate; this may be an Army Depot Rework stamp (see Karem & Steves Karabiner 98k volume IIb, pages 780-839).

Very good G-Date rifles rarely come on the market! Moreover, early Kar-98k rifles have become very scarce in recent years, and this example is priced reasonably due to the bolt assembly mismatch.  As such, this is an excellent opportunity to own a classic German rifle made at the inception of Nazi rearmament and a surviving witness to both victory and defeat!  [sk][ph:L]
