Very Good condition Japanese Type 38 cavalry carbine made in 1939 bearing the signs of combat! Visible just forward of the rear barrel band on the left side of the stock is impact damage from a grenade or other small fragment; the strike also caused a subtle hairline fracture on the opposite side of the stock running back a short distance from the rear barrel band.
Principal markings include: “33764” (serial number); kissing dolphins logo (manufacturer); characters Shiki & “38" (model: Type 38); Ni Kana character for 4 (production series 4).
Short Type 38 carbines are much harder to find than the standard Type 38 rifle. This carbine has all-matching serial numbers and the condition is Very Good with 90% of the blue, straw, and polished white finish remaining. The bore is excellent with strong rifling. The stock has two visible final inspection stamps on the bottom edge of the butt-stock. The gun still retains its original cleaning rod – and is correctly unfinished (white).
The maker, Nagoya Army Arsenal, Chigusa Factory, manufactured approximately 18,675 Type 38 carbines in 1939; based on the production series and serial number, this example was made in November 1939. The chrysanthemum Imperial Japanese Army property mark on the receiver has been removed; the Japanese were permitted to remove or deface the imperial chrysanthemum prior to surrendering the weapon at the war’s conclusion.
Excellent opportunity to acquire a veteran Japanese Type 38 carbine used in close combat during the Pacific war. It is also an all-matching collector grade example made prior to Pearl Harbor – and before the manufacturing quality declined! [sk][ph:L]
