Magnificent like-new German Kar-89k service rifle made in 1942!  This example is impossible to upgrade.

Army standard issue 7.92mm Kar-98k service rifle made early in the war.  Principal markings include: “8942g” (serial number); “bcd 42” (manufacturer and date of manufacture); eagle over “749” (military acceptance stamp); “Mod. 98” (model: Karabiner Model 1898); “c” over “WaA18” (manufacturer’s code for stock subcontractor Dresdner Tischfabrik Hermann Menzel); “ch” (manufacturer’s code for barrel subcontractor Fabrique Nationale Werke Lüttich).

The rifle has all-matching serial numbers (including all bolt assembly subcomponents to include the firing pin) and the overall condition is exceptional with 99 percent blue remaining.  The bore is like-new as well with a mirror finish.  The condition of the stock is also like-new with one minor push on the left side of the comb.

The maker, Wilhelm Gustloff Werke of Weimar, manufactured 158,300 Kar-98k rifles in 1942; based on the serial number, this rifle was made in July 1942.  The firm assembled complete rifles entirely from subcomponents supplied by subcontractors.  The NSDAP (Nazi Party) owned and operated the Gustloff facility, which supplied forced labor from the nearby Buchenwald concentration camp.

Please note: Due to a change in inspection procedures in 1942 at Gustloff, the inspection stamps applied to the right side of the receiver and the right stock face were discontinued in early 1942.  In addition, the army “H” (Heer) property stamp on the right stock face was discontinued by the same order, thereby leaving a bare unmarked stock face on production in most of 1942 and all of 1943.  The resumption of a new style combined inspection stamp/“H” property mark on the stock face did not resume at Gustloff until 1944.  Please see Karabiner 98k Volume IIb by Karem & Steves p.541 for a discussion of these changes.  Photographs on p.571 show Gustloff rifles made in 1942 (“f” block) and 1943 without any stamps on the right stock face.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a collector-grade early war Kar-98k rifle in unissued condition!  After the failure of Barbarossa in 1941, the German Army on the Eastern Front was reinforced and reequipped in early 1942 for the summer offensive (Operation Blue) in Southern Russia – a bold endeavor that would take the advance to the Caucasus region…and disaster at Stalingrad.  This rifle is a rare surviving example of exactly what a German Landser in Russia or North Africa was handed to win the war in 1942.  [sk][ph:L]
