This Model 1855 Rifle-Musket was manufactured in 1859. It came from a museum in Up-State New York.  All parts are original on this firearm including the long range, British Enfield inspired, elevating rear sight. The stock is in its original untouched oil finished black walnut; the edges are fairly sharp. There are scattered dings and scratches from service use. There appear to never have been inspectors' stamps on the pane opposite the lock, and this suggests State, rather than Federal issuance. All three iron barrel bands are present with the correct serif “Us” on the right side adjacent the band retaining springs.  The fore end cap is brass and secured by an interior screw. The original correct ramrod with tulip shaped head and retaining swell and threaded end is in place. The "US" stamped butt plate is present.

The lock plate with beveled edges is marked “1859” horizontally to the rear of the hammer. In front of lock plate is marked “U.S./Springfield”. The original Maynard tape primer door and its assembly is present and is fully functional in the interior. The primer door bears the American wing spread eagle. All lock plate markings are sharp. There is some minor age blotching but no pitting. The original 40-inch-long rifle barrel has the “VP” and “eagle” proof marks with an “1858” date on flat part of breech. These marks are sharp and clear. The barrel edges around breech are sharp. All metal is smooth with a nice untouched gun metal gray patina prevailing. The barrel rifling is very good. If you are looking for a nice 100% original Model 1855 rifle-musket this would be it.    [pe][ph:L]
