This English Pattern 1853/58 rifle-musket is complete, all original. This gun made by Barnett is in attic condition. By that we mean unmolested by modern hands.  No sanding of the stock or cleaning of the metal components. The 36-inch barrel has a gray-brown patina with some scattered darker spots or crusty areas, and some pitting around the breech and bolster. It is London proved.  All bands, swivels, rod, and sights are in place, and all are original to this firearm. The rear sight has half its elevator ladder broken off but this happened long ago.  The elevator is in place but the small base screw holding the spring is missing. The good condition rifled bore shows light pitting. The lock markings are very good. These are: "BARNETT" over "LONDON" forward of the hammer, with an English crown over "TOWER" at the rear. The lock functions perfectly. The brass mounts have a uniform, pleasing, medium to dark patina. Like the metal, the wood was never cleaned. It has expected the scattered handling wear with field service dings, bumps and scratches, but no breaks or repairs. There is a thin sliver of wood out between the rear of the front band and nose cap right side.

Perhaps indicative of a Confederate import, the stock bears stamp on the comb, just forward of the butt plate tang that appears to be an “LS” in an oval. This is in the same position as the “CH/1” in a circle stamp conclusively identified as the mark of Curtis and Hughes acting as Confederate viewers/inspectors. Never-the-less it is certain that US imported Enfields were also inspected, accordingly "the jury is out" on this "LS" individual. With the Enfield comes a perfectly matching bayonet that looks like it has always been with this weapon. A very respectable example for the purist! [pe] [ph:L]
