This Model 1861, .58 caliber, percussion rifle-musket, dated 1863, is in complete, and fine condition. Produced at the Savage Revolving Fire Arms Company of Middletown, CT. They manufactured roughly 25,500 of these standardized infantry weapons between 1862 and 1864.

The 40” long barrel is smooth with a very light brown tone overall. No pitting to mention around the breech and bolster. A strong “1863” remains on the top of the breech. Left facets show the “V P [eagle head]” and “N.J” state marks. Bolster with clean-out screw. Good, and complete, front and (blued) rear sight. Bore is clean and bright with fine rifling; very nice.

Lock plate is clearly stamped “U. S. / SAVAGE R.F.A. Co. / MIDDLETOWN, Ct.” in front of the hammer and “1863” behind hammer. A spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on lockplate between hammer and bolster with its head worn away. Mechanics are crisp and strong.

Barrel, lockplate, hammer, butt plate, bands, trigger guard, rear sight, and ramrod all share the same toned look. Steel butt plate strongly stamped with “US”.

Black walnut full stock is in very good condition overall. Has slightly worn finish around the butt plate. Stock exhibits another “N.J” stamp on the flat opposite the lock. Wood exhibits the usual fine dings and dents from use and storage.

Retains its steel, tulip-head ramrod with a threaded tip, all in excellent condition.
