This is an exceptional Sharps New Model of 1863 Rifle that was manufactured in the first half of 1865. One of 6,150 in an Ordnance Department order placed on December 1st, 1864. Deliveries began on February 6th, 1865 and were completed on June 28th, 1865. The rifle has a block front sight, that serves as a lug for a socket bayonet. It’s equipped with the Lawrence patent pellet primer and a hinged patch box. The barrel is blued and the forearm cap, barrel bands, hammer, receiver, side plate, patch box, and butt plate are color casehardened. The screws and small components have a fire blue finish. The stock and forearm are oil-finished, straight grain American walnut.

The barrel is roll-stamped "SHARP'S RIFLE/MANUFG. CO./HARTFORD CONN." in three lines ahead of the rear sight and "NEW MODEL 1863" behind it. The Ordnance sub-inspection mark "M.N.M", for Mose N. Marshall, is stamped on the left barrel flat. The left side of the receiver is stamped with the Sharp's 1848 patent date, and the right side of the receiver/ side plate are stamped with the R.S. Lawrence patent date/ Sharp's 1852 patent date. Serial number C39116 is stamped on the upper receiver tang. The Ordnance final inspection mark, which consists of the script initials "NLP" in a rectangle and “TWR” in another, is stamped on the left stock wrist. Single letter Ordnance sub-inspection “M” marks are stamped on most components. A small “AWM” is stamped in the comb of the wood stock, just in front of the butt plate.

The overall condition is excellent. The rifle shows only very limited storage and handling wear. The bore is bright shiny with sharp rifling the entire length, except about 3” forward of the breach, is rough. The screw heads show minor tooling marks. A few bruises in the wood. The most notable is on the right side of the far end of the fore-stock, between the nose cap and last barrel band. An approximate 3/8” divot is found, that has a minor hairline crack on each side. The barrel retains about 95% plus of the original blue finish, with no bayonet wear near the muzzle. The forearm cap, barrel bands receiver, breech block, lever, and patch box have 80% plus of the original case colors with some fading on contact points. The butt plate shows no surface rust on the heel and retains nearly 100% of the case colors. The Ordnance final inspection marks on the left stock wrist are very crisp.

This exact rifle is published on page 363 in volume One of Roy Marcot, Ron Paxton and Edward Marron Jr’s, Sharps Firearms Book. This outstanding example of a Civil War Sharps New Model of 1863 Breech-Loading Rifle would be hard to improve upon.    [stp][ph:L]
