This is perhaps the best "attic condition" Richmond Armory made rifle-musket we’ve ever seen; by "attic" we mean not only "in the black" but also excellent 100% original condition.

This is a "low hump" Richmond that but for the ramrod is all Richmond made parts; this is a rarity. The low hump on the lock would put its date of production to mid-1862. The lock plate markings are sharp and read "1862" at rear of the hammer and "C.S." over "RICHMOND VA." forward of the cock. There is a deep smooth brown patina on the lock plate. The cock or hammer is Richmond made. The bolster and breech on the 40-inch barrel are smooth and shows no rust and minor pitting from percussion cap burn. The clean-out screw and percussion nipple are original. The barrel date of "1862" is hardly visible unlike the barrel proofs "V" and "P" and the correct eagle head stamp.  The tiny Richmond "break" in the "P" is evident; this is not a Harpers Ferry barrel! The barrel in deep brown patination matches the lock perfectly in color.   All 3 bands and their springs are intact and the bands each exhibit the deeply stamped, haphazardly placed, Richmond "U"s. The 2 sling swivels are in place. All metal components have surface finishes that matches that of the barrel and lock. When you side up a barrel band the surface is factory bright. The front sight is correct.

The Richmond made trumpet-head thin shaft threaded ramrod has been replaced by a US Model 1855 type with its swell ahead of the front band. This was done when the weapon was made or certainly in its working life. The wood has been trimmed professionally to accommodate the "swell"; a C & R applied letter "Q" that appears ahead of the trigger guard was applied at the Richmond Artillery Workshop when this ramrod was inserted. The .58 caliber bore has excellent rifling. The rear sight is of the Model 1855 type, and is Richmond made. On its underside is the "steady pin" and the barrel is appropriately, and crudely, cut to accommodate this sight's pin. The walnut stock with great color has sharp corners and a fine patina. The stock has no inspectors' cartouches and shows signs of period field use, but no abuse. The ubiquitous Richmond "Mule Shoe" is revealed when the lock plate is removed. The Richmond made cast brass nose cap and brass butt plate are in a mellow patina.

This is likely a war time captured weapon which would explain its super condition. If you have been looking for a great untouched 100% correct Richmond Armory rifle-musket this one is for you.   [pe]][ph:L]
