This model is also known as the transitional 1873/1879 model. Springfield manufactured approximately 25,500 Model 1877 rifles and carbines between 1877 and 1878. Barrels are proof marked with an eaglehead and large V/P. Rear sights are a stepped base or a continuous curved base. Locks are marked in front of the hammer are US/SPRINGFIELD. The breechblock was marked US/MODEL 1873. All stocks were marked with the markings of E.S. Allen, which is a script ESA in an oval cartouche over 1877 or 1878.
Offered is serial number 109248. It is marked on the barrel “PROPERTY OF STATE OF KANSAS”. No cartouches are visible. Lockplate and trigger guard shows heavy pitting. Bore has light rust but the rifling is good. Action works good.
