Listed as the Stevens Vernier New Model Pocket Rifle, with a production run of an estimated 1,500, from 1884 to 1896. This example being in .22 caliber rimfire. Featuring a 9 7/8” barrel and having an overall length of 23 ½”. The gun has a detachable brass shoulder stock that is dovetailed in the butt and secured on the backstrap by a thumb screw.
It has an iron frame that is nickel plated, with moderate wear to the high spots. The remainder of the frame shows dark colored patina coming through. Rear backstrap has a fitted area with two screw holes for mounting a vernier sight, which is now missing. The barrel is mostly plum color, with some bluing observed around the rear sight. Some small dings and scratched can be found, with a little light pitting under the muzzle. The front sight is a globe flip-up with small pin. Rear sight is the standard notch dovetailed. Top of barrel marked “J. STEVENS A & T CO./ CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A.”. The left side of barrel frame has serial number “22046”. Bore shows rifling, but is dirty and needs cleaning.
Grips are varnished two-piece walnut, secured with a single screw on each side. Push button barrel release and hammer function at half and full cock. Firing pin is located in the frame with a bushing.
Overall, a nice example of a turn of the century Stevens small caliber antique firearm. (stp)[ph:L]
