This original Civil War shoulder arm is a Colt “Special Model 1861” contract rifle musket made from 1861 to 1865 by the Colt Manufacturing Co. of Hartford, Connecticut. Though no serial numbers were used during the production of the M1861 Special musket, records indicate that some 100,000 such muskets were produced during that period with many supplied for various state sub-contracts.
Longarm is a percussion, .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader with the standard 40” round barrel and three iron barrel bands. No band springs. Lockplate markings are standard Colt Special markings: “U. S. / COLT’S PT F. A. MFG CO / HARTFORD, CT” in front of the hammer and “1863” date behind. All markings remain sharp and are generally clear; further explanation below. Spread-winged eagle stamped on bolster below the nipple.
Barrel markings are clear with proof marks “V / P / eagle head” on the left barrel breech facet, with “E.F. STEEL” under that. A sharp matching date “1863” stamped on top of the breech. Ramrod is present and complete with threaded end. Musket exhibits the standard two-leaf rear sight and three screw-tightened barrel bands. Sling swivels at the trigger guard and the middle band. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Bore is bright and clean with strong rifling. Various components exhibit sub-inspector marks. Butt plate is stamped with strong “US”.
Black walnut stock is in very fine original condition. Strong wood with very few of the usual small nicks and dings. Stock flat opposite the hammer retains a sharp edge and has two government cartouches.
All gun metal is in very fine, likely unfired, condition. The bright steel however, has an old coat of grease or gun oil that has dried and left a smeared dark brown coating. This coating will easily clean off; a small area was obviously scratched off with a fingernail to show the Colt stamp on the lock. But we leave this decision to the future owner. It is in great untouched condition as it is, but likewise, would be spectacular if properly cleaned.
A classic M1861 Colt Special Model musket. [jet][ph:L]
