Apparently an early battlefield visitor picked-up this collection of relics and stuffed the items into this small leather woman’s purse. That woman then dropped or lost the purse and its contents. It was then found again by another battlefield visitor, obviously many years later, as shown by the patina and wear on the purse. The bulges in the purse show how the leather aged and shrunk around the historic relics inside. The items that were found inside the purse include: 2 general service eagle buttons and an eagle “I” button with some original bright finish showing (more evidence of early recovery), 4 lead case shot balls, 4 fired minies, 1 dropped C.S. Gardner (all having only a light gray patina), and 4 iron grape shot balls ranging in size from 7/8” to 1 ½” in diameter. All items, including purse, are in relic condition but are in good condition.
Acquired from an old-time collector from Pittsburgh; possibly from the collection of the Jennie Wade Museum.
