The overarching theme for the Battle of Gettysburg 50th Anniversary commemoration was unity and reconciliation. This theme was reflected in take home mementoes for those in attendance. The item here represents both Union and Confederate Generals, Lee and Meade. The item is a canteen that has a gold-plated chain that connects the item to a blue ribbon. The chain is not original to the piece; however, the ribbon appears to be original. One side has ‘GEN LEE’ stamped in gold coloring and is encircled in ‘GETTYSBURG. PA / JULY 1863-1.2.3.4 JULY 1913’ which is written in blue. On the reverse is ‘GEN GRANT’ enclosed in the same writing. There are few signs of fading on the stamped patterns, but overall, the piece is in good condition.
A very interesting piece and unique find for those searching for items commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. [mk] [ph:L]
