Item Code: 2021-71

The Gettysburg National Park, administered by the War Department, had served as a military training ground even before World War 1. In 1917 the park served as an infantry training camp and in 1918 was home to the first Tank School of the U.S. Army under the supervision of Capt. Dwight D. Eisenhower, who worked to improve the coordination of light tanks and infantry. At the end of the war in November 1918, personnel were gradually transferred and the camp officially closed in March 1919. The camp was a vast complex of barracks, offices, mess halls, storage facilities, etc. This envelope likely came from a camp PX and has the printed address at upper left with “Tank Corps / Camp Colt / Gettysburg. PA.” along with the early tank corps badge. It was sent to a Bethel, CT, address and bears an August 1918 Gettysburg cancellation.  [sr] [ph:L]
