Likely an early battlefield pick-up, this 10-pounder, CS smooth side Read/Parrott case shot shell is in very good condition; clean, smooth surface. Tapered fuse hole in nose for drive-in type fuse. No fuse remains. Case shot appears to all be seated toward the base. Complete iron sabot has one small portion that pulled down when fired. Characteristic lathe dimple in the center of the base.
This artillery shell was found in a barn on the Baltimore Pike at Gettysburg. [jet] [ph:L]
