Jennie Wade commemorative celluloid pin for the monument erected in the Evergreen Cemetery circa 1900. The pin is inlaid in a bronze rope designed holder. The imaged portion measures 1” in diameter. On the reverse, there is a working pin with fastener. “G. A. SCHLECHTER CO.” is stamped on the back on a piece of worn paper that is secured to the backing of the celluloid face.
G.A Schlechter Company was owned and operated out of Reading, Pennsylvania by Gustavus A. Schlechter. He was a jeweler in the early 1870s and began manufacturing jewelry in 1889 primarily for fraternal organizations and specializing in medals. The company was also known to produce jeweled novelties and souvenir spoons in the later 1890s through the turn of the 20th century.
This is a unique item for those looking for early Jennie Wade commemorative pieces. [ph:L]
