"Genuine" is the key word and this example collected around 1870 and donated to a museum shortly afterword is just that namely, a genuine, battle scarred, "was there" relic of the Battle of Gettysburg.  On loan from the Honorable Levi Swanton Gould (March 27, 1831 – March 22, 1917). Gould was an American businessman and politician who served as a member, and chairman of the Middlesex County Massachusetts commission, and as the first mayor of Melrose, Massachusetts. He placed many fine items at the Memorial Town Hall Museum of Melrose Massachusetts which was affiliated with Grant GAR Post # 4. See pictures attached.

The dimensions of the bark covered log are 5-inches in diameter by 12-inches in height. The diameter of the embedded iron canister ball is 1-inch. The weight is 5 pounds. Nailed to the log is a 4-inch by 2 1/2-inch hand lettered display tag that reads: "Cannister Ball Struck Tree From Round Top" followed by: "Slaughter Pen". Then on the base of the custom-made black painted stand one finds another more casual handwritten note that reads: "Presented to U.S. Grant Post 4, GAR, by Hon. S. Gould. Taken from tree growing on Little Round Top, Gettysburg." The low ground between Devil's Den and the Round Tops was the scene of fierce combat on July 2, 1863. The carnage here was so great that the area earned the name "The Slaughter Pen". Plum Run, nearby, literally ran red with blood. Not much else to add except this is a Holy Grail of Gettysburg relics!!    [pe] [ph:L]
