Visits to Gettysburg began as early as the days directly following the battle and became increasingly popular in the proceeding years. Pictured here is an unidentified group of men visiting Little Round Top at the monument of General Gouverneur Warren circa late 1800s/ early 1900s. The 6 men in the photo are dressed in long dress frock coats and ties appropriate for the turn of the twentieth century. The statue to General Warren was dedicated in August of 1888 by the 5th New York Volunteers Veterans’ organization. The statue was placed on the spot reported where Warren first spotted Confederate flanking movements. Both past and present, Little Round Top is one of the most visited sites on the Gettysburg Battlefield along with Devil’s Den.
The filigree frame measures 15 ½” by 13 ½”. It appears to have once been a forest green color with gold gilt on the filigree design. The inner board has a few nicks and chips due to age. The bottom right corner of the outer filigree frame has an inch chip. The photo is in good condition as well as the frame. Image is matted, and the photographer is unknown. On reverse, there are a few scrapes and scratches on the wooden frame along with original wire loops and hanging wire. [ad] [ph:L]
