IMPROVISED SIDE KNIFE FROM COLT REVOLVING RIFLE SABER BAYONET WITH GETTYSBURG ASSOCIATION

$395.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2022-1859

This Colt revolving rifle saber bayonet was converted to use as side knife, and comes with a note from a previous owner mistakenly identifying it as a modified Whitneyville Plymouth bayonet, but that it had been recovered in Gettysburg and purchased in the 1960s from Clyde Culver, who ran a shop/museum in town and occasionally sold relics found on land he owned in the area. The blade was either intentionally broken to shorten it for use as a knife or was damaged in some fashion and then crudely modified. The locking spring with button and the spring screw were removed as superfluous to its use as a knife, and the muzzle ring shows no sign of a quillon finial, but the hilt still shows the serial number 1497 stamped on the reverse of the guard near the grip, to mate it with a rifle, and a partially visible “234” stamped on the crossguard indicating a reissue or switching of the bayonet to accompany a different rifle.

The blade is dark and shows shallow pitting and crustiness. The hilt has old dings and scratches, and preserves an even, aged brass patina. No markings are visible other than the numbers, but it has a great look fitting an early battlefield pick-up and a perhaps southern improvisation.  [sr]  [ph:L]
